The management of bariatric persons in health and social care presents many challenges for healthcare staff. Admissions into acute hospital environments are no longer an isolated event with patients attending routinely for elective weight loss surgery or unplanned medical admissions.
Robust management systems are essential if staff are to cope with the additional challenges that occur when providing safe dignified care for people of size. Chapter 12 in The Guide to the Handling of People –a systems approach looks at the ergonomic and management systems needed to ensure a safer system of work. This presentation will look at the practical application of the theory as the author applies the principles of his published work outlined in chapter 12.
The examples provided will relate to the risk management process adopted when setting up a service to provide bariatric surgery in an acute hospital setting. This will consider the potential risks from the initial outpatient appointment, the peri-operative and ward environments.
